Plantar warts are caused by HPV and normally take the form of small growths that appear as lesions on the weight-bearing regions of one’s foot. While they are not seen as a serious health concern, it is important to treat these warts to maintain the health of your feet. Plantar warts most commonly affect children and teenagers, those with weak immune systems, and those who tend to walk barefoot on wart-causing surfaces like locker rooms. If you notice your lesion is bleeding, painful, or has changed color, it is recommended that you consult with a podiatrist. If the warts do not go away on their own or keep returning, and you are experiencing discomfort with normal activities, it is also advised you seek further help. Keeping your feet clean and dry, avoiding picking at your warts, and changing your shoes and socks daily are a few ways to help prevent plantar warts from appearing. If you would like to seek further information about plantar warts or would like the assistance of a professional to treat your plantar warts, we recommend you consult with a podiatrist.

Plantar warts can be very uncomfortable. If you need your feet checked, contact Dr. Lee R. Stein from Lake Shore Foot & Ankle, PC. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

About Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are the result of HPV, or human papillomavirus, getting into open wounds on the feet. They are mostly found on the heels or balls of the feet.

While plantar warts are generally harmless, those experiencing excessive pain or those suffering from diabetes or a compromised immune system require immediate medical care. Plantar warts are easily diagnosed, usually through scraping off a bit of rough skin or by getting a biopsy.

Symptoms

  • Lesions on the bottom of your feet, usually rough and grainy
  • Hard or thick callused spots
  • Wart seeds, which are small clotted blood vessels that look like little black spots
  • Pain, discomfort, or tenderness of your feet when walking or standing

Treatment

  • Freezing
  • Electric tool removal
  • Laser Treatment
  • Topical Creams (prescription only)
  • Over-the-counter medications

To help prevent developing plantar warts, avoid walking barefoot over abrasive surfaces that can cause cuts or wounds for HPV to get into. Avoiding direct contact with other warts, as well as not picking or rubbing existing warts, can help prevent the further spread of plantar warts. However, if you think you have developed plantar warts, speak to your podiatrist. He or she can diagnose the warts on your feet and recommend the appropriate treatment options.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Chicago, Highland Park, and Uptown, IL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Runners May Be Prone To Stress Fractures

Stress fractures may be a common injury among people who enjoy the sport of running and jogging. This can happen from the frequent impact the body endures as the feet consistently hit the ground. This condition typically occurs gradually, and can cause severe pain and discomfort. Common symptoms that are associated with this type of injury can include pain and swelling in the affected foot, and it may be difficult to walk. After a proper diagnosis is performed, which generally consists of having an X-ray taken, treatment can begin. This can include elevating the foot which may reduce a portion of the swelling, and wrapping the foot in an elastic bandage that can be helpful in providing adequate support. If you feel you have developed a stress fracture, it is suggested that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist who can help you with treatment options.

Activities where too much pressure is put on the feet can cause stress fractures. To learn more, contact Dr. Lee R. Stein from Lake Shore Foot & Ankle, PC. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep your pain free and on your feet.

Dealing with Stress Fractures of the Foot and Ankle

Stress fractures occur in the foot and ankle when muscles in these areas weaken from too much or too little use.  The feet and ankles then lose support when walking or running from the impact of the ground. Since there is no protection, the bones receive the full impact of each step. Stress on the feet can cause cracks to form in the bones, thus creating stress fractures.

What Are Stress Fractures?

Stress fractures occur frequently in individuals whose daily activities cause great impact on the feet and ankles. Stress factors are most common among:

  • Runners
  • People affected with Osteoporosis
  • Tennis or basketball players
  • Gymnasts
  • High impact workouts

Symptoms

Pain from the fractures occur in the area of the fractures and can be constant or intermittent. It will often cause sharp or dull pain with swelling and tenderness. Engaging in any kind of activity which involves high impact will aggravate pain.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Chicago, Highland Park, and Uptown, IL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

In severe cases, the pain may be so extreme, the weight of a blanket or sheet may be intolerable. It is defined as an ailment that produces crystals which lodge in the joints of the big toe. It occurs as a result of elevated uric acid levels that are found in the bloodstream. This can happen when foods that are eaten have a high level of purines. Foods that fall into this category can include red meat, shellfish, and drinks that contain sugar. If gout attacks are a frequent occurrence, a change in dietary habits may be beneficial in preventing them in the future. What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

How Do Heel Spurs Develop?

One of the most noticeable symptoms of a heel spur is pain in the heel and surrounding areas. It can occur as a result of walking and standing on hard surfaces, wearing new shoes that do not fit correctly, or after training for a specific sport. It can develop from consistent pressure that is put on the heel, and may cause a small bony protrusion to form on the heel bone. The symptoms that many people experience is pain on the bottom of the foot while pursuing activities that require walking and standing. If a heel spur is left untreated, pain and discomfort may be felt even when the foot is resting. Moderate relief may be found if a protective pad is worn in the shoe. Additionally, it may be helpful to stretch the heel frequently. This can be accomplished by standing on a step, and gently raising and lowering the heel. Severe heel spurs can be debilitating. If you are suffering from this ailment, it is strongly advised that you consult with a podiatrist who can properly treat this condition.

Heels Spurs

Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot and may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to affect other bones and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues, the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.

Treatments
